Strangely, the anger that surfaced as a result of the parental confrontation was re-directed towards striking pads, screaming, and controlled shoving with employees, which i think is counterproductive and in many cases dangerous. Sure, the participants may suffer some freedom and/or emotional rest from this exercise, but which will be short-lived. Without question, these souls are angry at their abusers, and that can blame them for that. But, the perfect solution is isn’t to perpetuate that anger but alternatively to dissolve it. Authentic anger dissolution are only able to be accomplished by learning how to calmly and confidently speak one’s will and, ultimately, get back one’s personal power. When this is achieved, the necessity for anger dissipates! As an example, Amy, a thirty-five year old compulsive overeater, was sexually abused by her step-father and verbally abused by her mother. As a result, Amy uses food to deal with her emotional distress and guilt. Based on her testimony on the April 26th episode, when she shared with her mom in the sexual abuse, her mother said, “It’s all your fault, you invite it, and you appreciate it!” Clearly, Amy is angry at her mom to the dysfunctional behavior. But moreover, she blames herself for the abuse and feels unworthy. To overcome this emotional trauma, Amy will need to address it directly.
Doesn’t that sound not difficult? Say that on the alcoholic or drug addict just stop drinking or drugging and get a career. Sounds good however, when the individual doesn’t learn new coping skills to switch the unhealthy ones they are using they are certainly doomed to repeat exactly the same behavior. Getting help to get a disease whether a food addict, alcoholic or drug abuser doesn’t suggest they’re a poor person.
When we eat, particularly when we eat highly desirable foods like sweets, fats and salt, we have been being satisfied and rewarded so we feel pleasure, often in heavy doses.
